Last night I visited the New Theatre in Cardiff to see a performance of Grease. As Grease is such a well known film, a lot of the people I spoke to on the night were waiting to compare it to the movie, and compare the cast to the well known faces of Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, but doing that, you would never, ever enjoy the show. So I told them to attempt to forget about the movie, and just live in the moment of the show.
I heard discussions around the theatre of this show being “amateur”, which in fact it was (so to speak.) Rhian Peake who played Sandy graduate from University in 2015, you can’t get fresher than that! But the way they acted and sang, these guys were no amateurs.
The choreography was spectacular, there was only one minor hiccup I saw, and hell, I only noticed it because I have dance training. It was with the times, complicated enough to impress, but easy enough for everyone to be able to do it. The chorus were one of the best I have ever seen, so props to those guys. *standing ovation.*
I had two stand-out performers on the night, and these two deserve have careers in this field. They deserve to be on the west end playing these characters because they were phenomenal.
Miss Helena-May Harrison played the love-to-hate Rizzo, and I will tell you, she blew my socks off. As soon as she came out in this pink-platform heels I was sold. Her facial expressions even when the focus was on someone else were spot on. And she brought her own attitude and finish to Rizzle that I absolutely adored, and as a Stockard Channing fan, she made me love Rizzo even more than I already did. I might even come close to saying that this girl MADE the show for me. Best actress I’ve seen on stage in a long, long, long time. Plus, her version of “The Worst Thing I Could Do”, was breath taking, Helena-May has one of those voices you just can;t forget, and everything about her Rizzo was fab. 100/10.
Now, my other favourite. He was charming, adorable, that weird ugly-handsome that girls go crazy over. Doody, aka, James Rockey. You know when you watch a new TV show, and there’s that nerdy guy, that you just want to succeed? Well he was it for me. He got the character DOWN, and throw in bits that literally made me laugh out loud. & that voice? This boy can SAAANG. At one point I found myself with my eyes firmly stuck on him, he was the centre of the performance for me at points. 10/10 Mr Rockey.
Bad points? Well I only have two, and they’re personal ones.
Number one, the accents. Sometimes they slipped, but what do you expect? I couldn’t do what they did. I’m just the person who writers about what they did, trying to make it seem easy to the readers, (which I assure you, it’s not.)
Number two, Sandy (Rhian) was too cute, it was a bit sickly. But this is coming from a hard-core Rizzo fan, sorry blondie.
Overall, this performance was so wonderful. It made me feel happy. I’m proud of all the cast for putting on such a good show for us.
