Disclaimer (kind of): This is a short story which I wrote about 2 years ago. It’s funny to read back on and nice to see how my writing has developed and shaped into what it is today. I found it on my old laptop so I thought it would nice to put it here to always remember where I started. Thanks guys!
One knock, two knocks, three knocks, four, who’s that knocking on your bedroom door?
You wake up, what’s that sound? You climb out of bed, and put on your slippers. You hear the knocking. What could it be? One, two, three, you wait for the fourth, but there’s no final knock. One step, two steps, you stop at the foot of your bed. Mummy and daddy are asleep, little Johnny too. Three steps, four steps, you’re by the door now. One knock, two knocks, three knocks, four. Your breathing’s heavier now as you reach your hand out to the door. Silence fills the room and you open the door; nothing.
You turn around and there’s a knock at the door again, one knock, two knocks, three knocks; but no fourth. You run to your bed and hide under your covers, “Mr Snuggles, we have to protect the family,” you say to your legendary fighting bear, knowing the fate of your family rests on your shoulders.
One knock, two knocks, three knocks, four. Five knocks, six knocks, seven knocks, eight.
You grab Mr Snuggles and stand back off your bed. You kick off those slippers and stamp towards the door. “Go away or I will defeat you” you mouth to the door, not wanting to wake mummy and daddy to the monsters, in fear they may be eaten.
But what’s that sound? Bang, bang, bang. You stop at the door and press your ear against it. The monsters are heading for little Johnny’s room! You’re scared, but you know this is the only chance you’ll have to save little Johnny’s life. You push open the door and with one long squeaaaaaak – it’s open and you’re ready to take on the enemy. You grab Mr. Snuggles’ paws and hold him close to your side, “We can do this, little Johnny depends on us, Captain Snuggles.”
With your companion at your side you start down the corridor to reach the battle grounds. You hear mummy and daddy growling and grumbling in their sleep. You’re lucky the monsters didn’t attack them, but poor little Johnny will have a fright! You want to break into a run as you watch little Johnny’s door opening slowly… One knock, two knocks…
You reach little Johnny’s door now and your breathing is faster and stronger than ever. Inside you can hear him, but you can also hear something else. What is that? You look towards your Captain and you ready yourself.
Opening the door, you hold Mr Snuggles high in the air, and you see wide yellow eyes covering little Johnny’s body. Shaking in your pyjamas, you know there is only one thing you can do to prevent this initial attack. You feel a small lump growing in your throat and you give your dear companion a quick embrace. “For Johnny,” you whisper as you throw Mr Snuggles into the heat of battle. He attacks the monster with all his power, flailing his arms like a wild beast, but it’s no good, Mr Snuggles is down, and you’ve lost your support. The monster towers over Mr Snuggles now. The monster stretches out it’s long and furry arms and appears to beat Mr Snuggles down to the floor. There’s nothing you can do now, your support his fallen. He hits the ground hard, and you whimper.
Your eyes settle upon the monster. You clench your fists and place them upon your hips like mummy always does when she’s angry. “No one hurts my bear!” you say defiantly. You run forward toward little Johnny’s bed and you dive onto it, tackling the monster to the floor.
You fly over little Johnny’s body, and he barely moves an inch. You wrap your arms around the monster as your bodies collide and the monster hisses out. Screeches and yelps sound out as the long claws of the monster slash and slice around. It catches you, you’re wounded. The monster somehow escapes your grasp and makes for the doorway. Just as it reaches it, the monster turns its head, its yellow eyes glaring into your soul, and it almost seems to purr with excitement as you watch it leave.
You crawl over to the other side of little Johnny’s bed and you cradle Mr Snuggles within your arms. You smile, he smiles back, his wonky eye makes you giggle. You stand up, holding your wounded hero to your chest. Little Johnny is okay, and you saved the night. No one can know of what went on, no one must ever find out about the monsters, for they may not be as lucky as you.
You quietly leave little Johnny’s room now, swinging Mr Snuggles along the way. Outside your room is a familiar sight. Pebble, the family cat; with her beautiful lemon eyes and her long furry legs; her tail is swaying back and forth making a soft knocking noise against the wall. You smile, open your door and allow the feline inside. She gracefully jumps onto your bed and you swiftly join her.
You lay down, placing Mr Snuggles close by your side under the blanket. You close your eyes. Oh what would have happened if you hadn’t saved the day, poor little Johnny… What might have happened? Mummy and daddy would be terribly sad if anything happened to you or little Johnny, and they would be so proud if they knew what you had done; but alas, they will never know of your midnight battle against the monster of the night. The yellow eyed demon that escaped.
Pebble nuzzles her head against your hand now, and you smile at her warmth. Rolling over and holding Mr Snuggles to your chest, both ready for sleep, you think about the night you’ve had. You have done a great dead.
But what is that you hear… What is that sound?
Your eyes shoot open, and your head tilts towards the door.
One knock, two knock, three knock, four, who is that knocking on your bedroom door?
